Rethinking Your Garden

We have shed our wool sweaters, headed outside to clean our yards and contemplated the flowers to plant. So, what should we do to make this year’s garden more interesting?

Antiques and vintage garden pots, statuary and found objects can be part of the answer. These accents, vintage and otherwise, can easily be found by searching your parent’s basement, looking in shops of all sorts, and browsing for tree lawn finds (garbage day).

Collector, Not Hoarder

Americans are the number-one consumers in the world. For most of us that live relatively "normal" lives, our procurement and retention of goods would not be considered hoarding or collecting.  In the definitions of these words, there’s no mention of anything negative or even passionate about hoarding or collecting, respectively.

Even though we are big time consumers, do you know a collector? As the new generation of adults comes along, the interest in collecting seems to be weakening. I would hope, however, that being a collector would never be viewed as hoarding.

The RR Home Furnishings Loop

Cleveland is filled with hot spots, from University Circle with museums and Severance Hall to the near West Side with top-rated restaurants in Ohio City and Tremont. Some of these hot spots focus on food, others on theater or shopping. If one thing has not brought attention to a neighborhood, the mere existence of the whole has made it a hot spot. Unique areas like Chagrin Falls or Little Italy are great examples.

Believe it or not, Rocky River has also developed into a hot spot. Many may say the great restaurants that attract River residents and East siders alike are the draw. But there is another draw too: The “Loop” with its many options to help you feather your nest. Yes, Rocky River is a growing district for home furnishings.

Given my motto - We do it all...Just make the call, people often ask me exactly what is "all."  My first answer is everything, but I qualify that by saying that we help people that don't know who to turn to when it comes to a home or house.  When people hear the words estate sale, many think that someone has died and someone is selling the contents of a home. This is only one type of house sale that we handle.  Whether you are buying, selling, moving, downsizing, trying to de-clutter or stuck with an estate (as executor or guardian), we offer the services that can help!

Working Hard vs. Working with Heart

Everyone reaches a point in life where he or she starts to look for the true purpose of life. More and more people are in the quest for a meaningful life. Successful people who have enjoyed material comfort often conclude that it is no longer enough. Now they are seeking greater meaning in life. In a society where businesses undergo crisis - accounting scandals, market crashes, downsizings, burnouts, and more - a new ideology is needed.

Spirituality and business did not co-exist before, but people are now suffering from not being able to address the spiritual part of themselves. Today, corporate leaders are beginning to understand that to succeed in a competitive global marketplace, they must figure out how to tap into the creativity and innovation within people.

Create a Picture with Words

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and a picture can be key when discussing  antiques. Most antique shops field calls from people asking for assistance on what to do with Aunt Betty’s buffet or grandmother’s china. Without the piece or even a picture in hand, the antique dealer must rely on a verbal description  to assess an item. Let’s dive into the language and the important marks that will help you communicate with an antique dealer.

China or dinnerware is a common inquiry so let’s start here. First, turn the plate over and see what is marked on the bottom. There could be up to three types of marks. One, a transfer or decal identification may be there, representing the factory, retailer or pattern.

Most people find antique shops fun and interesting. They are filled with things from our past, from far off places, and from distant times. The merchandise is not the only entertaining act. But do not expect a command performance. Small business owners cannot always accommodate last-minute requests. If you call and make an appointment, you can be assured of my full attention and time.

It’s Wedding Season!

It’s wedding season for some. You will either be attending a wedding or you may be in a wedding. For those who are attending a wedding, a gift will be on your To Do list. Many will choose from the mainstream: Crate & Barrel, Williams-Sonoma, and Macy’s. However, there are other ideas for sourcing a wedding gift, from antique boutiques or re-gifting a treasure from your home. So if you are purchasing a gift or putting together your bridal registry, think outside the box.

At our shop, "Mitchell Sotka," we not only offer Personalized Bridal Registries, but we can also assist those guests who refuse to purchase from a big box store. In my twenty-two years of being in the antique business, I have always provided guidance to those looking for bridal gifts—both to guests or to the newlywed couple-to-be. The following will provide some ideas for gifts and explain how I gather facts to build a selection.

A Wife's Eye View

Owning a restaurant was a dream we fantasized about as dating evolved into married with kids. My hand to his glove, a partnership in life and in business. But like many dreams imagined on the back of young love, they were left at the door as reality and life took us in another direction.

A few years ago, we moved to Cleveland from Chicago. As our perspective changed that dream came back around nipping at our heels.

The Ritzy Chic Offers Vendor Space

People come into our shop and not only look for specific antiques and collectibles, but also ask if there are any other antique shops on the street.  Given these requests, I decided to make things simple by offering vendor/dealer space. Vendors typically carry an assortment of interesting items that, I believe, would meet the needs of our general customer base.

Steuben: An American Icon

Today, given instant gratification and carefree living, the demand for some products such as table top items - china, crystal, and silver flatware - to create gorgeous dining tables has fallen. Disposable, inexpensive and microwave-safe seem to be key words to an audience that has grown sharply over the past two decades. With this shift, we have lost some fine workshops here in the U.S. and in other parts of the world.

Steuben, an American glass factory, is one such company that created handmade fabulous stemware, accessories and other blown glass items. Thanks to antique stores and estate sales, we can continue to purchase Steuben and continue to be enamored by its beauty.

Welcome Spring with a New Vision for Your Home

Open any home magazine and you will see vintage and antique pieces in photos of high-end homes as well as more cost-conscious homes. Readers of The Rockport Observer may differ in aesthetics and lifestyles, but that is the cool thing about antiques. There is something for everyone - from simple lines to heavily carved ornate cabinets.
