Winter Snowflake Luncheon

The Traveling Girl Scouts

Fairview Park Girl Scout Troop 86 is hosting a Winter Snowflake Luncheon for area children ages three to 10 years on Saturday, February 20. The theme is Doll/Bear and Me! There will be a doll/bear parade, crafts, balloon animals, beauty stations and photo fun. Attendees should bring their favorite doll or stuffed friend.

The Winter Snowflake Luncheon is one of the troop's most ambitious fundraisers to date. It is being planned and executed by the troop members themselves, with troop leaders and parent volunteers overseeing. There is little doubt the luncheon will be a tremendous success, given the troop's excitement about creating a winter wonderland for the younger kids in the area.

Some of the girls have been together as Scouts since kindergarten and 1st grade. While many of the original members have dropped out, the leaders knew that staying in through high school allowed the girls to be eligible for leadership training, travel opportunities and, of course, scholarships. When presented with the opportunity to focus on travel through Girl Scouts, the girls, now mainly sophomores and juniors in high school, accepted the challenge; thus the Traveling Girl Scouts.

The Winter Snowflake Luncheon is an opportunity for the troop not only to help fund a trip they've been planning for two years, but also to give back to the community. "When we first decided to become a traveling troop, we had no idea how hard it would be to raise money," said Abby Large, 16, a Fairview High School junior. "For every idea we come up with, we've had a lot of help from our families and the community. We want this event to be a good fundraiser, but most of all, we want the younger Scouts and kids that come to have fun and to remember our event as really special."

The Winter Snowflake Luncheon is being held at the Bain Park Cabin at 21077 North Park Dr. in Fairview Park. Two seatings are availabe: 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and an adult must accompany children. You can reserve seats at http://bit.ly/WinterSnowFP or send a check to Large Family, 20800 Valley Forge Dr., Fairview Park, 44126. For more information, email lmlarge@mac.com.
